Come Meet the Michael Jordan of Actual Bulls

Why bulls are becoming unrideable.

Fun fact: Cows and bulls often have best friends.

When they are around these best friends, they tend to be less stressed and less aggressive. This is why strategic pasturing is important. Or you’ll end up with a bunch of cows in a brawl.

We domesticated cows 8000 years ago. Our ancestors would have never imagined we’d be riding an angry bull — for fun. Or that we’d end up with unmanageable super bulls.

The bizarre spreading of genes

Part of why I write history and science is because I get fatigued from writing self-help content. I don’t generally read much self-help in my free time. Dorky random stuff is my preference.

I’m also not generally a fan of bull riding or other sports where animals are ridden — but there is a fascinating dichotomy at work.

It starts with sexual dimorphism: which explains the phenomenon by which males and females differ in size and appearance.

For example, horses have very little dimorphism: Males and females are nearly indistinguishable. Conversely, male gorillas are often more than twice the size of females.
