Being a high performer isn't immunity
There is no such thing as job security. I've seen incredible employees pushed out because of their chemistry with their manager. One project manager was borderline incompetent but kept getting promoted. He was sliding under the radar with the easier projects and a supervisor who knew how to work the system - and liked you.
Many firings are as much about relationships as they are about performance. Ensure you know who you are dealing with during the interview process. Ensure you are an asset, not someone the manager has to worry about or check on. Managers tend to have very simple assessments in their minds of how good we are. Why? Because their managers will ask them to the point questions about us.
