How I Come Up With Tons of Writing Ideas

It really isn’t as hard as it seems.

One of the most common questions I get is, “How do you come up with ideas?”

It’s funny because that is actually the easiest part of my job. I’ll show you a few tricks.

I was leaving the YMCA gym a few years back.

There was a mother in yoga pants walking fast with two kids around the ages of 10 and 5. She looked stressed and tired. It’s clear she was in a rush to make it to her class.

The younger child turned to his mother and asked, “Hey mom. Are there Yoga pants for boys?”

She barked out a laugh, “I’m not sure, honey. We’ll look into that later.”

And then they were gone.

It was probably just an innocent child’s question. But what if it wasn’t? Would she someday catch her son wearing dresses in the house? Was this just the beginning of a long journey ahead?

I wrote the scene down in a tab on my phone where I write down all the phrases I overhear.

Here’s the thing: I don’t know if I’ll ever use that premise. Or maybe that moment’s grand purpose is being used right now.
