The automatic doors to Crate & Barrel opened, releasing a cool blast of air that breezed over my body. It was a welcome reprieve from the Floridian summer heat. The store, which sold upmarket housewares, was empty and employees milled around. Colorful and varied items adorned the high shelves as chill instrumental music played in the background.

I was in my full button-up shirt, carrying a folder of resumes. By chance, I bumped into the store manager, Trish, whom I came to know well in the ensuing years.

“Hello, I’m Sean. I’m looking for a job. I have my resume right here,” I said, getting right to the point while beaming her a big smile.

“I’ll work hard and always have a good attitude,” I added. She seemed to like the blunt pitch and smiled back, perhaps sensing my eagerness. On a whim, she invited me upstairs for an interview — and from there, it was on.

One month later

I was on my knees holding a wrinkle steamer, with my Crate & Barrel nametag pointed towards the ground, my face so low it could kiss someone’s boots.
