I’m At An Airport

Turning a mundane experience into a story.

I’ve been meaning to do this writing experiment for a while.

The big idea: record events from an everyday experience, and form them into an article.

Why? Because the most common writing question I get is about inspiration.

People are fascinated with ideas and where they come from. The truth is — it’s much ado about nothing — literally. It’s the everyday experiences that reveal the stories you need.

We spent our Uber ride explaining the nature of a domestic partnership to our driver.

Our driver was in her early 20s. Like many women her age, she had a lot of thoughts about marriage, probably thinking through her future and what she’d want hers to be like.

Laura (my partner), laughed and said, “When I was explaining domestic partnerships to my mother, she initially thought I was trying to tell her I was a lesbian. She told me she was accepting of me in whatever I wanted in life.”

I also explained that, as a divorced man, I had minor grievances about marriage. Namely, that it makes people stay longer and be more unhappy.
