International friends often ask me which states are best and worst to visit.

I usually give several states as options for “best”. For the worst state, Mississippi is the easy answer — especially if you are black. But even if you aren’t, the state is a mess on so many levels.

In fact, there’s a saying, “Thank God for Mississippi.”

Imagine a South Carolinian sitting around the table with his friends. They are complaining about how screwed up the local government is, and how South Carolina ranks so poorly in education.

He might turn to his friends and say, “Thank god for Mississippi.”

What he leaves unsaid, “Because otherwise we’d be ranked 50th in education.”

Mississippi ranks at the bottom or near the bottom on 10 key metrics — including the rate of poverty.

It’s not a fun place to visit and it’s an entirely self-inflicted problem by state leadership.

Why it’s so screwed up
