The 2022 Press Freedom Index Rankings For Each Country

You should care about journalism. It matters in a big way.

As Putin continues his savage conquest and more countries slide downwards towards fascism, it has never been more important to have a free press.

In its absence, government can claw to consolidate power, and turn a thriving democracy into a corrupt autocracy that keeps people in poverty.

You need to care.

Politicians must be held accountable. As soon as governments start trying to shut down journalists and control press rooms, it’s a big sign of trouble.

You should also worry when leaders say every criticism is fake news or a coordinated attack caused by outside powers. It’s a total copout.

Each year, Reporters Without Borders does a free press ranked list of 180 countries. This is the “heat map” for 2022:

It has been a bad year for journalism. Disinformation proliferates and institutions continually crackdown on free speech.
