Light streamed through the large and curtainless windows, filling the room with a warm glow that left me squinting as I opened my eyes. A high ceiling looked back down at me, made even higher by my mattress being on the floor.
For the briefest of moments, I forgot where I was. The room was sparse, with only a few small pieces of mismatched furniture scattered around, but the house still felt spacious, open, and brimming with possibilities. The subtle smell of fresh paint wafted through the air.
I walked down the hall, my footsteps echoing through the empty rooms, as I imagined how I’d decorate and make them my own. The kitchen had shiny new appliances, which carried the promise of happy meals and gatherings with friends and family.
As I unpacked my boxes and settled in, I felt accomplished and grateful for the journey I’d been on. In the backdrop of many flaws, the home was a symbol of my hard work and determination. It represented new beginnings at the end of a long and bumpy road.
