Hidesaburō Ueno was an agriculture professor at Tokyo International University. Dr. Ueno always liked the Akita Inu breed, admiring their courage, intelligence, and personality.
Akita Inus were rare at the time, but after a long search, he finally found a breeder. He adopted a puppy, naming him Hachikō. When he got old enough, Dr. Ueno began letting the Hachikō accompany him to the train station for his work commute.
